Chromium symbol Cr, silver-white metal, belongs to group VIB in the periodic table. Chromium has an atomic number of 24 and an atomic weight of 51.9961. It is a body-centered cubic crystal. The common valences are +3, +6 and +2. The oxidation number is 10. In 1797, French chemist L.N.Vauquelin discovered a new element in Siberian red lead ore (chrome-lead ore) and reduced it with carbon the following year to obtain metallic chromium. Because chromium can generate beautiful multi-colored compounds, it is named chromium according to the Greek word chroma (color).

Element discovery
Chromium was discovered in 1797 by the French chemist Walklan from what was then called the Red Siberian ore. As early as 1766, Lehmann of Germany, who was a professor of chemistry in St. Petersburg, Russia, analyzed it and determined that it contained lead. In 1798 Walkland named the gray needle-like metal he found chrom, which comes from the Greek word chroma (color). The Latin name chromium of chromium and the element symbol Cr are thus obtained. At about the same time, Kraprot also independently discovered chromium from chromium-lead ore.
The swords excavated by Chinese archaeologists in the Qinling Mausoleum are still extremely sharp. The reason is that the blade is covered with a layer of chromium, which does not sound magical, but it can prove that we discovered and used chromium thousands of years ago.
